16070, Lance Corporal, Albert Alfred Bridgford WARNER
Aged 23

1st Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment
Killed in Action on Sunday 30th May 1915

Albert Alfred BRIDGFORD was born in Newmarket in Q1-1892 [Newmarket 3b:513] to Harry Arthur Bridgford and Elizabeth WARNER (née PARR). The family name was changed between BRIDGFORD and WARNER. BRIDGFORD or BRITCHFORD was the surname of his paternal grandmother. His parents married as WARNER in 1887, his birth was registered as BRIDGFORD and the Army appear to have him as WARNER.

1901 census...Albert BRIDGFORD [9] was at Harwood Terrace, Wellington Street, Newmarket with his father Harry BRIDGFORD [43], a stableman born in Mepal; mother Elizabeth [42], born in Newmarket, and sister Elizabeth [11] born in Newmarket.

1911 census... Albert Alfred BRIDGFORD was a grocer's traveller, living with his parents and sister Elizabeth at Rylstone Cottage, All Saints Road, Newmarket.

Albert was the only one of his battalion to die on that Sunday and only 3 died the previous day, only one has a known grave. The Battle for Festubert (which was won) had ended earlier in the week. This attack, and the failure earlier at Aubers Ridge, had shown up the shortage of shells. Only! 100,000 shells were fired in the first 4 days due to the shortages of ammunition, which of course did not effectively destroy the German front line defences.

His death was recorded in the Newmarket Journal of 21st August 1915.
